Stephen Phillips organizes and moderates the Research Practice Symposium at California Polytechnic State University. Speakers included: Beatriz Colomina, Mark Wigley, Jeffrey Inaba, Ed Keller, Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Lisa Iwamoto, and Craig Scott.

Dr. Stephen Phillips, AIA receives a Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowship to live in Washington D.C. for six months to pursue research at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in order to expand his dissertation for publication. Fellowship applications are received internationally from scholars who are working in the arts, humanities, and sciences.

Stephen Phillips’ Cal Poly research laboratory—Studio Ambition—holds their mid-term reviews at the San Francisco AIA, 130 Sutter Street and at Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), 1 Front Street in San Francisco. Invited guests included architects Roddy Creedon, Mark Anderson, Maria Paz Gutierrez, Ines Lejarraga, Keith Plymale, Rory Carroll, Bruce Tomb, Henri de Hahn, Margaret Ikeda, Lindsay Tella, and Johnson Tang.

Dr. Stephen Phillips, AIA receives a Postdoctoral Getty Residential Fellowship for the academic theme year “The Display of Art”, 2009-2010. The Postdoctoral Getty Residential Fellowship is designed to support emerging scholars to pursue research and expand their dissertations for publication. Fellowship recipients are awarded an annual stipend in addition to an apartment and office at the Getty. While in residence at the Getty, Fellows pursue projects related to the Getty Research Institute’s annual theme, make use of the Getty collections, join in a weekly meeting with other Getty Fellows and Visiting Scholars, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty Center. Applications are received from scholars of all nationalities who are working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

Dr. Stephen Phillips, AIA and photographer Monica Nouwens receive a Graham Foundation Grant to complete research in Los Angeles for their book project New LA Schools: A Site of Massive Change.

Dr. Stephen Phillips, AIA who was awarded the prestigious 2008-2009 ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) was featured in the The Tribune on Saturday, January 10, 2009.
