For the design of this new bathroom addition, the client wanted the sense of showering in the outdoors. Taking advantage of views into a rare tropical garden and old barn beyond, we designed a custom all-redwood shower room that opened out to a deck to the garden below. To maximize space and views, we designed a corner window with sliding shutters on the exterior, and a retractable mirror on the inside. Limestone tiles created a continuous surface on the floor and wet wall, while a concrete counter and sink were installed over redwood cabinets. In addition, to hide the toilet from view, we concealed it below an operable redwood bench. Effectively creating the feel of a modern sauna, the ceiling was then opened-up with a ridge skylight that extended the full length of the shower room to let in light.
