OLEKSYK RESIDENCE

Claremont, San Diego, CA

We designed this hillside bachelor pad to take advantage of the commanding canyon views, while capturing sites of the distant Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. For our client, Saturn Car Dealer Marty Oleksyk, we created a contemporary loft-like home that hugs the natural landscape, minimizing the need for extensive caissons and expensive foundation retaining walls. Set alongside the flattest portion at the top of the lot, the house reaches out to the farthest buildable point on the site. The side yard effectively becomes the front of the house where we designed a unique wrap-around deck alongside the great canyon views. Entry to the home occurs essentially from the side at the center of the building. At this point of bifurcation between the garage and main living area of the house, we created a cylindrical stair and hallway that extends up and beyond the folded planes of the roof, to organize the varied spaces. The plan then unravels from this main entry axis to step-down into a spacious living area that includes kitchen, dining, and living spaces, which extend onto a large deck alongside the commanding panoramic views. The central stairway rises-up to a second floor sitting area adjacent to the master bedroom, alongside an additional bedroom. The master bedroom and bath extend from the front of the house to the rear, with light accessed from all sides of the house in addition to a series of skylights, that then flow outside onto the rear yard deck. Spaces throughout the interior gesture formally through folding roof planes, and curvilinear surfaces towards extended site-lines within the canyon. In addition, there is a private lower level apartment and family room accessed from the central entry stair or towards the back patio. Adding modern sensibility and fire-protection, the house is clad with a grid of cement board panels, with anodized aluminum windows, doors, and trim.
